Club History

Cambridge Tennis Club was founded in 1926 and has been serving Cambridge as a not-for-profit club ever since. With four lit clay courts and a comfortable clubhouse, the club has a long and storied past.  Until 1974, the club was called Galt Tennis Club. In that year, the towns of Galt, Preston, and Hespeler were amalgamated.  The club executive at that time decided to name the club after the newly formed city - Cambridge.

In 2013 we became incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation. The objective of incorporation is to pursue grants, such as the Trillium grant. We routinely apply for and receive annual city of Cambridge grant funding.

We promote volunteerism through the Cambridge Gaming and Bingo Association. Every month, several members volunteer their services at events. In return we receive funding specifically for junior tennis development.

In 2018, we joined the Ontario Tennis Association. This allowed us to adopt and participate in the strategic plan to promote the sport of tennis. It was not until 2023 when we hosted our first OTA-recognized tournament, the Rogers Rookie Tour.

Nestled in the picturesque Soper Park beside a winding brook amid a stand of mature maple trees, the atmosphere at the club can be spell-binding—on bright days, electrifying. The sun, the heat, the shadows all contribute to energize play. Many tennis players have grown up with the Cambridge Tennis Club and never forget their roots. You may well find it the same.

Our har tru courts are reconditioned every year and you will find them a premium playing surface, allowing sliding if needed. Bounces are more predictable and slower than their hard court counterpart. We are so proud of our courts, we created a page on them Anatomy of Har Tru Courts.

Whether you play casually or competitively, you can play when you feel like it, or play more often. Join in on free tennis instruction or sign up for team tennis. Or take lessons from the club pro. Whatever your playing preferences, you will have a memorable tennis experience at Cambridge Tennis Club.
